       <description>The average West Virginia worker earned $34,001 in 2007, according to statistics released by WORKFORCE West Virginia, a division of the West Virginia Department of Commerce. The average annual wage in the state rose by $1,277, about 3.9 percent from 2006. Average annual employment grew to 708,313 from 705,281, an increase of 3,032. The five industries with the highest employment growth over the year were educational and health services (+1,317), professional and business services (+1,310), leisure and hospitality (+921), retail trade (+648), and mining (+605). The three industries with the highest declining employment were manufacturing (-1,879), construction (-593), and other services (-262).</description>
